TFG Expert Seminars

TFG Expert Seminars are short (less than 4 days in length) courses designed for experienced DB2 professionals that need to learn a specific topic in a short period of time. Classes are small, with six students at most, and students are expected to have the necessary skills to move at a rapid pace. Sessions combine lecture with hands-on labs, with the ambitious goal of having each student leave class prepared to return with a complete understanding of the technologies presented. If you need to learn something quickly, a concentrated class from the TFG Expert Seminars will help you get the skills.

Stored Procedures (TFG 710)

Students completing this intense two-day course will be ready to develop and deploy Stored Procedures. The course presents a straightforward development option for DB2 Stored Procedures with SQL/PL. SQL/PL syntax greatly extends the reach of traditional SQL by enabling the integration of business logic directly into database routines such as Stored Procedures, User Defined Functions and even Triggers. SQL/PL’s standardized, straightforward syntax includes logic control, looping and error handling, and facilitates code portability. The course uses the text, DB2 SQL Procedural Language for Linux, UNIX & Windows by Yip, Bradstock, Curtis, Gao, Janmohamed, Liu, McArthur, as a reference. Each student is provided a copy. Hands-on lab exercises guide students from the creation of simple Stored Procedures, through result set handling, nesting, temporary tables, dynamic SQL and more. Labs present both a manual development approach along with the use of the Development Center wizard.

DB2 Accelerated Database Administration Expert Seminar (TFGE231)

Suppose you needed to get someone trained to support your DB2 UDB database environment by the end of the month? What would you do? First you would select an individual with an understanding of relational database concepts and a willingness to learn a lot of new information in a short period of time. Then you would send this individual to the DB2 Accelerated Database Administration Expert Seminar because this class focuses on teaching the fundamentals needed to become a dependable DB2 UDB database administrator in three concentrated days. Your new administrator will learn to perform database administration tasks using DB2 UDB for Linux, Unix and Windows. Tasks introduced include creating DB2 instances, creating and populating databases, and the use of logical design to support concurrency and recovery requirements. Students will work through hands-on labs mentored by a Senior DB2 Consultant who understands the critical skills needed to maintain a healthy database environment. Will we cover everything in detail? No, so the classroom material directly references the DBA Certification Guide, DB2 UDB for Linux, UNIX, and Windows, by George Baklarz and Bill Wong, which each student receives as a reference and for certification preparation. This reference will help your new DB2 DBA solidify the knowledge gained in class and continue to learn more about DB2 Database Administration.

SQL Replication Expert Seminar (TFGE5745)

This 4-day course presents a comprehensive guide to SQL Replication. SQL Replication, also known as DB2 DataPropagator, is a tool used to perform data replication activities between IBM relational database systems and to perform the IBM Replication operations to define, manage, and maintain data replication functions for DB2 UDB for OS/390 and DB2 UDB for Linux, UNIX, and Windows. This fast-paced course begins with an introduction to the various replication components from the control tables, and progresses on to designing, defining and implementing tasks. Students work through lab exercises using the Replication Center GUI to develop a replication scenario. Once the scenario is established they are introduced to the ongoing operational maintenance and monitoring processes necessary to ensure optimal long-term performance. Troubleshooting, recoverability and performance tuning are covered in detail. Course materials extend beyond basic replication implementation to the use of federation and heterogeneous replication, advanced definition techniques, the use of ASNCLP command interface and peer-to-peer scenarios.

Scripting to Automate DB2 Administration (TFG711)

While databases grow in scale and complexity the typical DBA’s time is more challenged with maintenance tasks. IBM introduced Autonomic Databases as part of their Autonomic Computing effort to enable DBA’s to incorporate features and functions that enable a database to self-manage – to self-configure, self-heal, self-optimize and self-protect. Much of this autonomic capability is under-utilized as there is a need to create scripts that initiate these processes. This 3-day course explains the use of autonomic functions by way of an easy, repeatable formulaic approach to:

  • Advanced SQL (new Table functions, new Stored Procedures, etc.)
  • UNIX and Windows scripting
  • Stored Procedures / UDFs

Learn how to blend these various techniques to automate almost any DB2 database administrative process. Explore the alternatives to scheduling tasks on a recurring basis. Use your new skills to create a series of scripts to automate tasks such as generate recovery syntax, backup meta-data, and maintain a history of DB changes.

  • Course Length: 3 days
  • Tuition: $1050

These courses are available to students in the classroom or via Distance Learning with a high-speed Internet connection and the willingness to work with the instructor outside of normal business hours, if necessary, to keep up with students in the classroom.

DB2 Application Development

Stored Procedures (TFG710)

  • Course Length: 2 days
  • Tuition: $950

This course is available to students in the classroom or via Distance Learning with a high-speed Internet connection and the willingness to work with the instructor outside of normal business hours, if necessary, to keep up with students in the classroom.
