“Help!! My Manager Said We’re Moving Off the Mainframe!” Webinar Thursday

Posted by Frank Fillmore on November 14, 2016 under DB2 Education, DB2 for z/Linux, DB2 for z/OS, DB2 Gold Consultants, DB2 Migrations, Frank Fillmore, HTAP, IBM Champion, IBM DB2 Services, IDAA, TFG Blog.

Many thanks to the IBM z Systems team – Annette Zawacki and Jim Reed in particular – for supporting and promoting Thursday’s webinar.  We seem to have struck a nerve as the registrations reads like a “who’s who” list of System z customers.

We understand many organizations are facing pressure from management teams who believe “newer” solutions are better, and dealing with operational issues resulting from the aging workforce and accumulated “technology debt” brought on by years of reliable data processing on the mainframe.  Who ever thought THAT would be a problem??

We are polishing the presentation and looking forward to assisting System z customers and colleagues with a proactive response plan.  I hope you will join us – the session will be delivered from 11am-12:00pm EDT, Thursday, November 17th.  Registration is required; register HERE.

Abstract:

Technology is all about innovation and everyone knows the mainframe is as old as dirt. Therefore, according to many CIO’s, now’s the time to move to something new, like maybe open source, in the cloud with some of those cute animals.

How can loyal System z users respond to this short-sighted “management by airline magazine” approach? Join us to learn tactics to win the battle of the best platform to trust with your organization’s critical data and applications. We will prepare you to respond to the “modernization” message with a clear and logical action plan that promotes organizational efficiency, cost savings – and sanity (the mainframe!!)

The 3 critical takeaways:

  1. Locate, gather and excite your IBM z team.
  2. Be smart, be bold. Understand the enemy – where management teams are hearing the mainframe is obsolete message and the specific issues to address.
  3. Gather collateral to *wow* your colleagues. Learn where to get industry white papers, how to complete a System z cost analysis and schedule activities to address management’s concerns.

Facilitators:

Frank Fillmore: DB2 Gold Consultant Frank Fillmore has been working with System z customers throughout his 30 year career in IT. Most recently Frank has been working with IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator (IDAA) customers and working with customers to leverage the value of the mainframe. Frank is also an IBM Champion.

Kim May: Kim May is the Vice President Business Development at The Fillmore Group, an IBM Business Partner specializing in IBM data management software and services. Kim is an IBM Champion and serves on the board of the Baltimore/Washington DB2 Users Group.

The IDAA is a high-performance appliance that integrates IBM Netezza and zEnterprise technologies. The solution delivers extremely fast results for complex and data-intensive DB2 queries on data warehousing, business intelligence and analytic workloads.  You can:

– Query data at high speeds-to significantly improve response times for unpredictable, complex and long-running query workloads.

– Extend the capabilities of DB2 for z/OS-to support a cost-effective analytics solution for data warehousing, business intelligence and predictive analytics.

– Lower operating costs-by reducing System z disk requirements and offloading query workloads to a high-performance platform.

Please note:  this class is offered exclusively to IBM z Systems customers considering an IDAA purchase.  Registration is required.

I hope you will join us and learn more about the IDAA! If you have any questions on the class, please feel free to contact me at kim.may@thefillmoregroup.com.

DB2 101 Event – 8 Seats Still Available!

Frank and I attended an IBM Business Partner event in Philadelphia earlier this week where we met with several IBM’ers supporting Business Partner initiatives in 2016.  Each of the specialists presented their “best of” solutions to the partners in attendance, and then patiently answered our many questions (mostly mine – sorry team!)

The final preparations for our Woodberry Kitchen lunch event are underway:   Frank and I are polishing the presentation, IBM’s Andrew Levine and Warren Heising are tracking down answers to my Cloud deployment “what if?” questions, Megan is gathering gold coins for attendees who ask Frank good technical questions, and Jolanta at Woodberry Kitchen has me salivating with her menu recommendations.

If you will be in Baltimore April 21st and haven’t registered yet, please do!  Register HERE.

Free Hands-on IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator (IDAA) April Class

IBM’s 2012 announcement of the IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator – the IDAA – the Netezza/mainframe hybrid, delivered IBM’s first Hybrid Transaction/Analytics Processing (HTAP) solution. Now, after 3 years and multiple enhancements, the IDAA continues to promise great things for IBM DB2, VSAM and IMS customers. According to our calculations, 90% of IBM System z customers don’t own an IDAA yet – and we think everyone should have one! Willie Favero Enterprise Tech Journal IDAA Article

Posted by Frank Fillmore on March 4, 2016 under DB2 Education, DB2 for z/OS, DB2 Stars, HTAP, IDAA, TFG Blog.

If I Have a DB2 Analytics Accelerator, Do I Still Need zIIPs?”

I highly recommend Willie Favero’s article in the Winter edition of the Enterprise Tech Journal to anyone who either owns an IDAA and has asked this question, or is considering an IDAA and trying to cost justify the investment.  This is great reading.

Willie’s email address is at the end of the article.  I am sure he would be happy to discuss the article and share his opinion on anyone’s specific situation.
