Willie Favero Enterprise Tech Journal IDAA Article

If I Have a DB2 Analytics Accelerator, Do I Still Need zIIPs?”

I highly recommend Willie Favero’s article in the Winter edition of the Enterprise Tech Journal to anyone who either owns an IDAA and has asked this question, or is considering an IDAA and trying to cost justify the investment.  This is great reading.

Willie’s email address is at the end of the article.  I am sure he would be happy to discuss the article and share his opinion on anyone’s specific situation.

Fillmore 2016 Scheduled Marketing Events

The Fillmore Group had a terrific 2015 thanks to our great customers and terrific consulting team.  We are looking forward to an exciting 2016, with some key focus areas already “in the works” and of course plans to remain as competitive and flexible as possible so that we can continue offering top quality technical education and consulting at competitive prices, along with helpful, knowledgeable IBM Analytics software purchase assistance.

Our 2016 schedule contains some annual highlights:  IDUG (in Austin this year; should be great!), the IBM Insight Conference in October and four quarterly meetings of the Baltimore/Washington DB2 Users Group, our local RUG.

In addition we are planning a 4-part webinar series to support customers working to keep System z thriving and growing in their organizations, another free, hands-on IDAA class, and assistance with getting a college or university in the Baltimore/Washington area to work with the IBM Academic Initiative team.

Happy Holidays!  2016 is coming up fast!!

Insight Conference Discounts – Hurry!!!

Posted by admin on September 1, 2015 under DB2 Education, Insight 2015, International DB2 Users Group (IDUG), TFG Blog. Tags: .

As everyone knows, when school starts, it’s time to begin planning for the annual IBM Insight Conference.  For those of us (like me) whose presentations were not selected there’s no free pass…just a ticking clock with the conference fee going up, up, up until it reaches the final $2,295 full price.  Yes, that’s the cost if you don’t act early and snag a discount.

The first round of discounts expired in early August, so if you haven’t registered yet, you missed the really good one, the Early Bird $700 discount.    But…my procrastinator friends…there is still a $300 discount available through September 18th.

One more thing:  before you start punching in that credit card number, check with your local users group to see if they have any passes or discounts available, and check with your friendly IBM rep to see if he or she has any education packs or discount options available.  IBM Education Packs, the coupons you buy to pay for training classes, can be applied to the conference fee.

Do your best to keep the cost down, because even if you know the conference is an invaluable part of your efforts to keep your skills current, your manager may raise an eyebrow when you give him the MasterCard commercial “Priceless!” pitch.  Cause this is all before the airfare and hotel and food and…

See ya there!

Frank to Present on HTAP at Philadelphia System z Meeting

Posted by Kim May on August 21, 2015 under BLU Acceleration, DB2 Education, DB2 for z/OS, DB2 Gold Consultants, Frank Fillmore, IBM Champion, IBM DB2 Services, IBM Information Management Software Sales, IDAA, Netezza, TFG Blog.

Frank will be presenting, “Hybrid Transaction Processing” at the new Philadelphia System z group meeting at Maggiano’s Little Italy, located at 205 Mall Boulevard, King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, 19406, on Friday, September 18th.  Frank’s presentation will run from 10:45am – 11:45am, after which lunch will be served.

In his session, Frank will describe and compare the four distinct data retrieval technologies available from IBM, including two Hybrid Transaction and Analytics Processing (HTAP) platforms.  Choices are good to have, but how do you choose which technology to apply to a particular business use case?  Learn now these technologies differ, including their relative strengths and weaknesses.

Also on the schedule to present are Bill Shipley, Senior DBA from Vanguard, discussing his experience facilitating analytics with both System z and the IDAA,  Mark Anzani, IBM Vice President of IBM z Systems Strategy and Montgomery Bauman, IBM Technical Specialist for z Systems.

The event runs from 9:00am to 2:45pm, and is being sponsored by IBM.  Register to attend at:  https://ibm.biz/zPhillyUserGroup

How to Find TFG’s IBM Analytics Course Schedule

Posted by admin on August 18, 2015 under Arrow ECS, Authorized Training Partner, Big Data, BigInsights, DB2 Education, DB2 for Linux Unix Windows, DB2 for z/OS, Global Skills Initiative, IBM Training Services Delivery Partner, InfoSphere, InfoSphere Streams, Optim, pureScale, Q-Replication, TFG Blog.

One result of the IBM Global Skills Initiative is the complexity around course scheduling and registration as there are now five Global Training Partners managing these processes.

The Fillmore Group is aligned with our software distributor, Arrow ECS, for IBM Analytics training delivery.  Through our relationship with Arrow we deliver public, open enrollment IBM Analytics classes in our Towson, Maryland, classroom, as well as distance learning, remote classes, and private classes.

Finding our classes on the Arrow website can be a challenge, but there are two ways to do this.

#1   Click here for classes scheduled for the next 60 days

This link will take you to the pre-sorted courses scheduled to run at The Fillmore Group in the next 60 days.

#2   Visit the Arrow ECS website and sort courses

If you would like to review the courses delivered by The Fillmore Group in Towson as well as courses delivered by other Arrow affiliated vendors in other locations, follow these instructions:

  1. Click on https://ecsedu.arrow.com/ibm/us
  2. At the top of the screen hover over or pull down “Scheduled and Distance Classes”
  3. Click on “Training schedules”
  4. Select “United States”
  5.  In the list of locations, De-select “All”, then check “Towson”
  6. Select “6 months” for the time period to display
  7. Answer “No” to the “Show Only Guaranteed to Run” question
  8. Select “All” for topics, hardware and software
  9. Click the “See” button to display the classes

You should see a list of classes scheduled displayed like this.  The schedule contains dates and hyperlinks to register for individual sessions.

*Free* Hands-on IDAA Training – November 9th and 10th

Posted by admin on July 16, 2015 under DB2 Education, DB2 for z/OS, DB2 Gold Consultants, Frank Fillmore, IDAA, TFG Blog.

DB2 Gold Consultant Frank Fillmore will deliver a free, hands-on IDAA class at the Radisson Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland, on November 9th and 10th.  The course outline and registration link are HERE.   The Welcome Packet with travel and lodging recommendations is HERE.

Class is free, however students are responsible for their own travel and lodging expenses.

The IDAA is a high-performance appliance that integrates IBM Netezza and zEnterprise technologies. The solution delivers extremely fast results for complex and data-intensive DB2 queries on data warehousing, business intelligence and analytic workloads.  You can:

– Query data at high speeds-to significantly improve response times for unpredictable, complex and long-running query workloads.

– Extend the capabilities of DB2 for z/OS-to support a cost-effective analytics solution for data warehousing, business intelligence and predictive analytics.

– Lower operating costs-by reducing System z disk requirements and offloading query workloads to a high-performance platform.

Please note:  this class is being offered exclusively to IBM z Systems customers considering an IDAA purchase.  Registration is required.

I hope you will join us and learn about the IDAA.

Training Anyone?

The Fillmore Group 2H 2015 Class Schedule

With all the challenges IBM’s move to the Global Skills Initiative (aka outsourcing education) has created for DB2 users, please remember IBM classes do still exist and are available for the patient and persistent.  Fear not!  If you need training, we are prepared to help.

After seeing public training nosedive over the past two years we are now seeing a bit of a resurgence.  Are classes really running?  Well, in all honesty, not often.  However, we are seeing a few run here and there, and when they don’t, with our relationship with Arrow ECS (one of the five Global Training Partners) intact, we are learning to “collect” students interested in training, and either gather them together for classes, or provide private training at affordable rates.

I’ve just submitted our second half of 2015 public training class schedule to Arrow (see the attachment above) and expect to see the classes posted on the IBM training site (IBM.com/training) within the next couple weeks.  I welcome anyone looking for a class – whether it’s on my schedule or not – to contact me at kim.may@thefillmoregroup.com so that I can work some coordination magic for you.
