Kim has just returned from IBM’s annual “z Bootcamp” where they prepare their System z sellers for the upcoming year with a series of product updates, announcements and education.  Her takeaway message for 2016 was loud and clear:  IBM intends to continue to enhance and extend the capabilities of System z so they can remain relevant and leading the effort to leverage the power of System z data.

Which leads, naturally, to the “how?” question.  At The Fillmore Group, as an IBM Business Partner we believe our ability to connect with Data Scientists and Data Architects and to help them understand the data stored in System z will help us all better align our interests and build a successful data and analytic ecosystem.  To kick start this effort we have planned a lunch event at the award-winning Woodberry Kitchen in Baltimore where Frank Fillmore will present an overview of System z.  Read more below – and please join us if you can!

“IBM z Systems (Mainframes!) for IT Architects and Data Scientists”

Abstract
Fifty percent or more of a large enterprise’s data – especially the lifeblood online transaction processing (OLTP) data – likely reside on IBM z Systems (aka mainframe) computers.  In many organizations, mainframes remain a black box inside the “glass house” data center.  Yet the rich transactional data they contain are crucial to predictive analytics, such as fraud detection, and real-time data warehousing applications such as point-of-sale market basket analysis.

This lunch session is intended for Architects and Data Scientists who don’t have a mainframe background, but have been tasked by lines-of-business to develop new competitive insights into customers, supply chains, insurance claims, financial transactions – and/or any of a variety of other opportunities to turn an enterprise’s OLTP data into Big Data.

DB2 Gold Consultant and IBM Champion Frank Fillmore will explain:

The types of data are found on the mainframe, including:
• DB2 for z/OS (relational database)
• IMS – Information Management System (hierarchical database)
• VSAM – Virtual Storage Access Method (indexed file)

Frank will also explain the four key approaches to unlocking the data:
1. HTAP – Hybrid Transaction and Analytics Platform
2. Replication to heterogeneous data stores
3. Virtualization of heterogeneous data stores
4. ETL – Extract Transform Load

Frank will also discuss the how these approaches apply to the types of data in the context of the application requirements such as service level agreements (SLAs).

The session will be held on Thursday, March 3rd, from 11am-2pm at the Woodberry Kitchen, 2010 Clipper Mill Road, Suite 126, Baltimore, Maryland, 21211.

Registration is required.  Register HERE.

If you are unable to join us in Baltimore, Frank will deliver similar content in a webinar on Friday, March 11, 2016.  Registration for the session, to be held between 11am and noon, EST, is HERE.

Please note:  registration is required for both sessions as space is limited.  If you are a mainframe systems programmer or database administrator this is *not* the session for you (you should already know this stuff!)

#IBMInsight – Champions Being Championed!

I am frantically trying to get everything completed to ensure MY Insight experience is great but wanted to share…ten of IBM’s Champions for Analytics were asked to respond to questions related to technology trends and analytics.  Interesting feedback, and of course, particularly flattering for The Fillmore Group as Frank was one of the ten selected!

It’s on Tumblr…take a look!  http://ibmevents.tumblr.com/tagged/IBMChampion

See you at Insight!

Congratulations to Frank on the selection of his 2015 Insight Conference presentation!  Frank’s presentation (session #3584 for those of you already  working on your schedules) is titled, “DB2 ^ (Netezza | BLU) = Hybrid Transaction and Analytics Processing (HTAP)”.

As soon as the Insight schedule is released I will update this post with the session date and time.  Stay tuned!

In his session Frank will describe and compare the four distinct data retrieval technologies available from IBM, including two Hybrid Transaction and Analytics Processing (HTAP) platforms. Choices are good to have, but how do you choose which technology to apply to a particular business use case? Learn how these techniques differ, including their relative strengths and weaknesses.

– The traditional RDBMS, relying primarily on indexes to speed access

– The new BLU Acceleration columnar compression and memory-optimized database

– IBM PureData System for Analytics (Netezza), which deploys racks of Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) processors to parse data

– IBM InfoSphere BigInsights, the IBM distribution of Hadoop

Beth Flood, Program Manager for the IBM Champions for Analytics, today announced the 2015 Champions.  Congratulations!  The complete list of Champions is on the IBM website at:  ibm.com/developerworks/data/champions

The Champions program is in its sixth year, rewarding IBM Information Management advocates and expert technical users for their efforts in the community that promote IBM solutions.   These efforts include delivering presentations, supporting users groups, authoring articles, books and white papers, and overall giving the community a group of recognized specialists willing and able to help.  The program requires revalidation annually, to ensure we continue our efforts.  Frank and I have been honored to be recognized each year since the program’s inception, and we have greatly appreciated the rewards – working with Beth, networking with the Champions at conferences, getting new product announcements *before* anyone else, and of course, all the discounts and great stuff Beth manages to snag for us.

Most importantly, I am extremely proud when I review the list of Champions and recognize so many skilled DB2 consultants The Fillmore Group has had the pleasure to work with.  I wish I could keep you all busy all the time!  You are great!

2015 IBM Champions for Information Management

Posted by admin on March 12, 2015 under DB2 Education, IBM Champion, TFG Blog.

Congratulations to the 2015 Champions!

After work last night I stopped at the store and stood in line for about 10 minutes waiting to pay for a $4 hairband.  When it was finally my turn to checkout, at a nationwide retailer that’s been in the news for a data breach, I was asked for my zip code, email address, and asked to complete an online survey when I got home.  My frustration with the incessant collection of personal information – and the resulting Inbox clogging marketing emails, telemarketer calls and junk mail had me fuming!

Then, I got home and read the email from IBM’s wonderful Beth Flood telling me I was selected as a 2015 IBM Champion for Information Management and it got me thinking about the whole analytics, social networking and community ecosphere that’s been developing over the past ten years.  It’s immature, and often annoying, and definitely still needs work.  However, on the bright side, it has enabled individuals and organizations to make better decisions so much faster (and yes, often accurately).  We are all becoming conditioned to expect things to work faster and technology to know our preferences and anticipate our choices.

Both Frank Fillmore (another 2015 Champion – congratulations!) and I have had the opportunity to participate in this program designed to encourage and reward people in the DB2 community who share our experiences and knowledge with others – through the same social networks and tactics that we all sometimes find aggravating.  However, when things work – when, for instance, I am able to connect with a DB2 customer and assist them in finding appropriate education, or when I coordinate an event that enables DB2 users in the community to gather and learn about new solutions, it works as designed and really helps people get the information they need.

Thank you Beth, and thank you IBM for supporting the Champions program and inviting us to participate.  I will remind myself of the power of the unsubscribe button, and try to be mindful of the positive changes data accumulation and analysis bring to our lives.  I appreciate being a part of it.
