DB2 101 Event – 8 Seats Still Available!

Frank and I attended an IBM Business Partner event in Philadelphia earlier this week where we met with several IBM’ers supporting Business Partner initiatives in 2016.  Each of the specialists presented their “best of” solutions to the partners in attendance, and then patiently answered our many questions (mostly mine – sorry team!)

The final preparations for our Woodberry Kitchen lunch event are underway:   Frank and I are polishing the presentation, IBM’s Andrew Levine and Warren Heising are tracking down answers to my Cloud deployment “what if?” questions, Megan is gathering gold coins for attendees who ask Frank good technical questions, and Jolanta at Woodberry Kitchen has me salivating with her menu recommendations.

If you will be in Baltimore April 21st and haven’t registered yet, please do!  Register HERE.

Free Hands-on IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator (IDAA) April Class

IBM’s 2012 announcement of the IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator – the IDAA – the Netezza/mainframe hybrid, delivered IBM’s first Hybrid Transaction/Analytics Processing (HTAP) solution. Now, after 3 years and multiple enhancements, the IDAA continues to promise great things for IBM DB2, VSAM and IMS customers. According to our calculations, 90% of IBM System z customers don’t own an IDAA yet – and we think everyone should have one! Join us for this free, 2-day, hands-on, technical introduction to learn how an IDAA can benefit your System z shop.

Willie Favero Enterprise Tech Journal IDAA Article

If I Have a DB2 Analytics Accelerator, Do I Still Need zIIPs?”

I highly recommend Willie Favero’s article in the Winter edition of the Enterprise Tech Journal to anyone who either owns an IDAA and has asked this question, or is considering an IDAA and trying to cost justify the investment.  This is great reading.

Willie’s email address is at the end of the article.  I am sure he would be happy to discuss the article and share his opinion on anyone’s specific situation.

IDUG, DB2-L and Charming Developers

Posted by Kim May on February 29, 2016 under BLU Acceleration, DB2 for z/OS, HTAP, IBM DB2 Services, IDAA, Oracle, TFG Blog.

There was some discussion on DB2-L this past week, not about “charming developers” (as in, “gee, that developer sure is charming!”), but about how the DB2 community can encourage developers to use the IDUG listserv as a resource for application coding questions.  Because, there are many extraordinary technical people monitoring the list.  And yes, many can also be quite charming to new listserv users!

Right now I see the division between DB2 users and their organizational colleagues growing as System z workloads are being restricted by cost and security concerns.  Quite frequently there appears to be very little communication between DBA’s and developers within organizations.  With larger organizations bringing teams of data scientists on board, many of whom are unfamiliar with the mainframe, the divide further broadens, as the data scientists view developers as their allies.

With the introduction of Hybrid Transaction/Analytical Processing (HTAP), the ability to run OLTP and Analytics together should be bringing data warehouse applications back to the mainframe.  The new data scientists, and their application developer colleagues, will need their DBA colleagues to help.  I hope DB2-L is one of the resources that makes the transition for everyone easier.

Looking Toward 2016 – TFG Events Schedule

Fillmore 2016 Scheduled Marketing Events

The Fillmore Group had a terrific 2015 thanks to our great customers and terrific consulting team.  We are looking forward to an exciting 2016, with some key focus areas already “in the works” and of course plans to remain as competitive and flexible as possible so that we can continue offering top quality technical education and consulting at competitive prices, along with helpful, knowledgeable IBM Analytics software purchase assistance.

Our 2016 schedule contains some annual highlights:  IDUG (in Austin this year; should be great!), the IBM Insight Conference in October and four quarterly meetings of the Baltimore/Washington DB2 Users Group, our local RUG.

In addition we are planning a 4-part webinar series to support customers working to keep System z thriving and growing in their organizations, another free, hands-on IDAA class, and assistance with getting a college or university in the Baltimore/Washington area to work with the IBM Academic Initiative team.

Happy Holidays!  2016 is coming up fast!!

#IBMInsight – Serge’s Q Rep Presentation – Not to be Missed!

Posted by Kim May on October 21, 2015 under #IBMInsight, Insight 2015, Q-Replication, TFG Blog.

For users of Q Replication, IBM’s Serge Bourbonnais will be conducting a lab session and presentation Wednesday at next week’s Insight Conference along with IBM’s Xue Bo.  The session is titled: “IBM InfoSphere Data Replication Q Replication Performance: Troubleshooting Bottlenecks“, and is conference session #LCG-1598.

The session will be held Wednesday from 10am – 1pm Pacific time in Bayside F – 08, in the Mandalay Bay South Convention Center Level 1.

The presentation is intended for an audience of IT Strategists and Architects.

The abstract is:

IBM InfoSphere Data Replication Q Replication can replicate transactions across continental distances with sub-second latency and allow live reporting over replicated data. This session demonstrates how to determine precisely the time and cause of any replication latency exceeded occurrences, by analyzing the Q Replication monitor tables. In this lab, attendees also see how to collect the monitor information, which counters are the most important, what questions to ask next when a value is out of range, what further data to collect to quickly pinpoint bottlenecks, and how to resolve the issue.

If you are currently using Q Replication, or considering an implementation, I recommend you attend this session.  The conference link for the lab session is here.  Hope we will see you!

#IBMInsight – Champions Being Championed!

Posted by Kim May on October 13, 2015 under #IBMInsight, DB2 Gold Consultants, Frank Fillmore, IBM Champion, Insight 2015, TFG Blog.

I am frantically trying to get everything completed to ensure MY Insight experience is great but wanted to share…ten of IBM’s Champions for Analytics were asked to respond to questions related to technology trends and analytics.  Interesting feedback, and of course, particularly flattering for The Fillmore Group as Frank was one of the ten selected!

It’s on Tumblr…take a look!  http://ibmevents.tumblr.com/tagged/IBMChampion

See you at Insight!
